Profile

Name: Professor George D. Magoulas
About:

George Magoulas has a BEng/MEng (Systems & Control) and a PhD (Neural Network Learning) in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Patras, Greece, and a PGCE (Higher Education) from Brunel University. He held R&D posts in industry from 1990 to 1993 and from 1997 to 1998, where he worked in several national and EU projects on the development of embedded systems employing soft computing and computational intelligence methodologies. In 2000, he joined the Department of Information Systems and Computing, Brunel University, where he held Lecturer and Senior Lecturer posts. In 2004, he joined the School of Computer Science and Information Systems at Birkbeck College, University of London as a Reader, and in 2009 he was promoted to Professor of Computer Science. He currently serves as Programme Director of the MSc Advanced Information Systems, MSc Intelligent Technologies, MSc Information and Web Technologies.

George has edited two books entitled “Adaptable and Adaptive Hypermedia Systems” (IRM Press, 2005), and “Advances in Web-based Education: Personalized Learning Environments”  (Information Science Publishing, 2006), and he was Guest Editor for the Journal of Network and Computer Applications (Elsevier), the journal Interacting with Computers (Elsevier), the International Journal of Artificial Intelligence Tools (World Scientific), the journal Computers in Biology and Medicine (Elsevier), the journal Virtual Reality (Springer), and Applied Intelligence: The International Journal of Artificial Intelligence, Neural Networks, and Complex Problem-Solving Technologies (Springer). He has been appointed to 9 Journal Boards, including User Modeling and User Adapted Interaction (Springer), Applied Intelligence (Springer), International Journal of Artificial Intelligence Tools (World Scientific), and Evolving Systems (Springer).

Prof Magoulas has received awards for his research work from the Greek State Scholarships Foundation (1999), the IEEE (2000 and 2008), the EUNITE (2001 and 2004), the IADIS (2006) and the ACM (2009), and has secured grants from the EPSRC, the ESRC, the AHRC, and the JISC. His current research interests are in modelling, learning, adaptation and evolution in complex environments with applications in user modelling, sequence processing, adaptive web-based systems and personalised learning environments. More information on his activities is available on his personal website.
