Profile

Name: Dr Sara Price
About:

Sara is a Senior Lecturer in Technology Enhanced Learning based at the London Knowledge Lab in the Faculty of Children and Learning at the Institute of Education, London. She has a background in psychology, with extensive experience in HCI.  Her research interests focus on the role of digital technologies (as external tools that offer new opportunities for interaction and cognition) for learning, teaching and training in school and health related education. Much of her work involves the design, development and evaluation of emerging digital technologies (mobile, tangible, sensor), exploring ways in which they can enhance learning through mediating new forms of thinking and reasoning; and the development of methodological approaches in HCI.

PREVIOUS RESEARCH:

(2012) Exploring the use of Web 2.0 and mobile technologies for postgraduate medical education. Funded by the London Deanery. With: Niall Winters, Caroline Pelletier and Martin Oliver.

(2011) GeoSciTeach JISC funded project to design and develop a customosable teacher-based geo-spatial application for orchestrating scientific fieldwork activity. This project, based at the LKL, is a collaboration between the IoE and Birbeck, in partnership with George Roussos , Carey Jewitt and Paul Davies. More info here

(2010-2011) ESRC Post-doc Fellowship: Mentor to Andrew Manches

(2008-2010) EPSRC funded Designing Tangibles for learning: an empirical investigation (from January 2008). This is a collaborative project between the IoE with Sara Price as principle investigator and Birkbeck with George Roussos as co-investigator, both based at the LKL. For more details see http://www.lkl.ac.uk/research/tangibles/

This project hosted the following events:

Surface Tension: (supported by EPSRC, UbiComp Grand Challenge; LKL): A one-day event held at the ScienceMuseum's Dana Centre, bringing together a number of research projects exploring innovative interactive and multi-touch surfaces.

Early Career Exchange with Floyd Mueller: (with support from EPSRC, UbiComp Grand Challenge): A collaboration to extend the understanding and use of tangible technologies in the form of exertion interfaces to engage participants in collaborative, playful learning through physical activity.

(2007-2009) The Augmented Toys study, in collaboration with NicolaYuill†(University of Sussex) and Steve Hinske and Matthias Lampe†(Computer Science, ETH, Zurich) is exploring shareable tangible user interfaces in play materials. The augmented knights' castle playset was developed from Playmobilplaysets (www.playmobil.com) at ETH (see this link). We will assess whether adding location-specific sounds (music and soundeffects) and verbal commentary to the playset will support the development of children's listening, speaking and narrative skills. We also hope to use the Augmented Knights' Castle to support pretend playin children with autism.

(2006-2008) Gatsby funded Learning Skills for Science Evaluation. This project evaluated the Science Enhancement Programme (SEP)'sLearning Skills for Science programme. The main aim was to ascertain theimpact of the English-based LSS programme on the teaching and learning of science in secondary schools. More detail here: http://www.lkl.ac.uk/cms/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=195&Itemid=91

(2005-2006) Projects as part of the†Kaleidoscope NoE:†Investigating the†Impact of Technology-Enhanced Learning on Roles and Practices in Higher Education, and†e-Learning; a new agenda for universities from Candidate Countries as part of the†EENOVATE†project.

(2003-2004) The†SENSE†project, a collaboration between Nottingham University and the University of Sussex (funded by JISC). This project explored the relationship between e-Science, GRID technologies and learning, and investigated ways to support scientific enquiry through the design and development of new technologies and data representations.

(2001-2004) Post-doc position on†EQUATOR†IRC (funded by the EPSRC). Sara's research focused on mobile and pervasive technologies as tools to mediate learning, exploring how combined physical digital environments can promote novel forms of playing and learning, and encourage new ways of thinking. The two main projects she was involved with were: The†Hunting of the Snark, which was an adventure game designed to enable pairs of children to collaboratively discover and reflect upon new kinds of experiences in mixed reality spaces; and the†Ambient Wood, an outdoor learning experience, where pervasive technologies were used to digitally augment a woodland in contextually relevant ways, enhancing the ëusualí physical experience available to children exploring the outdoor world. These projects were done in collaboration with Bristol, Southampton, Nottingham and the RCA.

(1997-2002) DPhil (funded by the ESRC and supervised by Dr. Mike Scaife), based on theories of external cognition (Scaife and Rogers, 1996) and cognitive dimensions of representation (Green, 1989), investigated the cognitive effectiveness of using computer-animated diagrams for learning about dynamic processes, such as the circulatory system.
