Name: Dr Shakuntala Banaji

Shakuntala was a Researcher on a European Union project CIVICWEB, at the Centre for the Study of Children, Youth and Media where she has previously worked on the projects Children in Communication about Migration (CHICAM), Media Smart and Rhetorics of Creativity.This project on Creativity which was about the discursive construction of creativity in a number of policy, academic and practical contexts, was carried out for Creative Partnerships and resulted in a critical review of the literature. She has taught English and Media studies in secondary school for a number of years, guest lectured on Hindi Film and audiences in India and the UK, taught on the Media and Society BSc at South Bank University and now teaches on the MA in Media Culture and Communication at the Institute of Education and for the British Film Institute.

Her doctoral research into the meanings made by young viewers from representations of sex, gender and ethnicity in Hindi films was funded by the Economic and Social Research Council. The main findings of this research can be found in a book Reading Bollywood: The Young Audience and Hindi Films by Palgrave Macmillan, 2006.

Shakuntala has worked as a researcher on the project 'After September 11th: TV News and Transnational Audiences' and has an abiding interest in disaporic relationships to national and international media. She has also worked as a consultant researcher and an advisory teacher for the English and Media Centre, examining Media Studies provision in the UK and making teaching resources about News for teachers and students of Media Studies. She continues to work in schools with teachers and with students of all ages when the opportunity arises.

Shakuntala left the LKL in August 2010 to take up a position at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
