About:![]() |
I am a Senior Lecturer in Adaptive Technologies for Learning and
Communication and an RCUK Academic Fellow. In my research I focus
on developing fully interactive, adaptive technologies through real-time
learner modelling, especially in relation to learners' affect and
motivation, and AI-driven interaction, including natural language and
non-verbal communication. I conduct my
research in the context of virtual reality environments and
increasingly within the serious games paradigm. I am also increasingly
interested in how robots and tangible technologies can be combined with virtual reality to
promote learning and communucation. As a
linguist I aim to understand socio-cultural as well as cognitive and
affective determinants of
successful communication and what constitutes success in
communication. A related research focus of mine is on understanding what
makes human-human communication and tutoring effective and how can
human experience and expertise inform human-computer
interaction and the design of intelligent components of an intelligent
learning environment. I use Artificial Intelligence
techniques to implement my models and I am keen to see those models
become part of full-fledged interactive systems that can be used in the
real-world by learners, educators and researchers. I have
experience in working with children and adults, with and without special
needs, in a variety of domains including social communication,
affective self-regulation as well as well-defined subject domains such
as physics and mathematics.
