Profile

Name: Dr Jennifer G. Sheridan
About:

Dr. Jennifer G. Sheridan is a Software Developer/Research Officer in the London Knowledge Lab who is developing software and hardware for next generation interactive learning and play. Currently, she is developing applications and devices for the "Children's Playground Games and Songs in the New Media Age" project (PI Andrew Burn - funded by the AHRC Beyond Text program).

Jennifer holds a PhD in Computer Science from Lancaster University (Digital Live Art: Mediating Wittingness in Playful Arenas), and MS in Human-Computer Interaction from the Georgia Institute of Technology where her collaborative research won a Gold Award of Excellence.

She has published widely in the fields of HCI, mobile technologies and tangible interaction with particular emphasis on designing technologies that support "communal engagement" and participatory interaction in unanticipated performance spaces. Her interest is in the intersection of live art, computing and human-computer interaction and in designing technologies to support transitions from observing to participating to performing. She is Director and Founder of the Digital Live Art conference series, is on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Performance Arts and Digital Media, as well as several program committees.

Before joining the London Knowledge Lab, Jennifer co-founded BigDog Interactive, a small company of programmers and artists who create bespoke code for interactive installations and performance events. BigDog Interactive is a preferred supplier of the London Science Museum and is an industrial partner on the £5 million Media Arts and Technology Training Centre. BigDog continues to work in both industry and academia providing technical expertise for innovative projects, diverse participants and users.

Previous projects include:

  • Designing tangibles for learning (EPSRC): For the project, Jennifer designed and built the Institute of Education's first DIY interactive surface using infrared technology, reacTIVision and Processing. The interactive surface was then tested with school children to explore how tangible technologies can assist young students in understanding basic science concepts.
  • Surface Tension (EPSRC, UbiComp Grand Challenge): A one-day event held at the Science Museum's Dana Centre brought together researchers exploring interactive and multi-touch surfaces and sensing.
  • Early Career Exchange with Floyd Mueller (EPSRC, UbiComp Grand Challenge): A collaboration with a leading expert on exertion interfaces and learning.
