Carlo is mainly interested in innovation processes in education. At the London Knowledge Lab he worked on the international project ITL (Innovative Teaching in Learning), sponsored by Microsoft Partners in Learning. He has been investigating the relationship between new approaches to assessment and "innovative" pedagogic practices. He has also carried out research on the following topics:

- The dynamics influencing creativity in teaching and learning
- Educational futures
- Game-based learning
- Participatory research methods
- Socio-cultural theory
