Research projects

Border-crossing digital arts & social science
AHRC 2013-14, LKL, RCA, UAL
The project aims to map, exploit and extend  synergies between the digital arts and social sciences to develop an innovative methodological framework capable of capturing a more holistic understanding of embodiment.

Happenstance
2012, Spike Island, Caper, University of Warwick
Aimed to bring computational thinking, agile methodology, physical computing & arts analytics to a diverse arts organisation. See my project blog here

The Silent Network
2011, UAL, British Library
Investigated ways to visualise knowledge and support collaboration and interactions in the Library

Re-designing airport security
2011, UAL, CPNI
Explored technology, communications, and design of the security checkpoint.

Designing With Intent: lnfluencing behaviour in transitional spaces
EPSRC 2010-11, UAL, Kings College London, MoD
This project aimed at ‘nudging’ or influencing behaviour in the transitional spaces between physical and digital.

e-Science Usability
ESRC 2007-9, LKL, Sussex, Nottingham
Developing e-science communities using mobile and sensor technologies, photo stories.

Designing for Technology-Enhanced Learning in Museums
EU 2007, Intermedia Oslo, LKL, Limerick, Umea
Developed framework for tech-based learning in science and history museums

Village e-Science for Life
EPSRC 2006-9, LKL, Imperial College London, Leeds, Bradford, Nairobi Universities
Researched and developed mobile technologies and sensor networks for teaching science to rural Kenyan farmers. Trying to do digital media using solar power and cellular networks holds valuable lessons for the developed world.

Pedagogical Planner for Learning Analysis and Design
JISC 2006-8, LKL, Oxford, London Met
Developed tool for university lecturers to plan courses, modules, sessions. Some screenshots here.

Kaleidoscope Network of Excellence in Technology Enhanced Learning
EU 2004-2007, 80 partners led by LKL and CNRS, FR
I served as head of dissemination, covering research across Europe, including video & print/web. Some sample outputs here.

Visitor-constructed museum trails
2003-10, PhD research
Investigated how people make meaning in and from museums, through encounters with artefacts, mediated by portable digital technologies.
