Name: Professor David Buckingham
About: David Buckingham is Professor of Education at the Institute of Education, University of London, where he directs the Centre for the Study of Children, Youth and Media. He currently teaches on the MA programme in Media and Communications, and supervises fourteen doctoral students. He has successfully supervised ten doctoral theses in the past eight years.

Professor Buckingham pioneered the development of classroom-based research in media education in the UK, and played a major role in the application of cultural studies approaches to analysing children's and young people's interactions with electronic media. He has directed numerous research projects on these issues, funded by bodies such as the Economic and Social Research Council, the Arts and Humanities Research Board, the Broadcasting Standards Commission, the Arts Council of England, the European Commission and the Gulbenkian, Spencer and Nuffield Foundations.

He is the author, co-author or editor of eighteen books, including Children Talking Television (1993), Moving Images (1996), The Making of Citizens (2000) and After the Death of Childhood (2000) and Media Education (2003). His work has been translated into fifteen languages.

Professor Buckingham has been a Visiting Scholar at the Annenberg School for Communications, University of Pennsylvania, a Visiting Professor at New York University, and a Visiting Professor at the Norwegian Centre for Child Research. He has taught and addressed conferences in more than 25 countries around the world.
