Professor Celia Hoyles of the London Knowledge Lab, Insitute of Education, University of London was presented with the first ever Royal Society Kavli Education Medal on Thursday 6 January 2011 by Sir Paul Nurse, President of the Royal Society at the ASE Conference in Reading. The medal, established by agreement with the Kavli Foundation, will be made biennially in recognition of a distinguished contribution made by an individual to science or mathematics.
The Royal Society Kavli Education Medal has been awarded to Professor Hoyles for excellence in the teaching of Mathematics 'in recognition of her outstanding contribution to research in mathematics education". Professor Hoyles has had a long and prominent career in mathematics education and research. She began by teachning mathematics in London schools before moving into higher education. She has directed over 30 research and consultancy projects concerned with mathematics at all levels and in a variety of contexts and published widely in articles and books. Professor Hoyles has donated the prize awarded by the Royal Society to the Centennial fund at the Institute of Education to support postgraduate study in mathematics education for an applicant from a less developed country. |

The Academy of Social Sciences has conferred the award of Academician on Professor Richard Noss, co-director of LKL, together with four other IOE professors. The award recognises those who have made a major and distinguished contribution to the social sciences.
The Academy of Social Sciences promotes social sciences in the United Kingdom for the public benefit. It is composed of Individual academicians and learned societies such as the British Educational Research Association and the British Psychological Society. Academicians are distinguished scholars and practitioners from academia and the public and private sectors.
