Adaptation and personalisation

We investigate the complexity of mutual interaction between learner, teachers and educational software developing new approaches for educational content adaptation, personalising the support and educational services to teachers and learners. Our aim is to create new opportunities for knowledge communication and learning meeting unique and specific needs, characteristics and preferences of individuals, groups and communities . We employ state-of-the-art technologies, such as ontologies,† artificial and nature-inspired intelligence paradigms, user modelling, and data mining, aiming to strike a balance between technologies, learners/teachers and their environments, between adaptation and accommodation.

Pilot e-learning Benchmarking Project

This was a benchmarking exercise carried out in common with four other Higher Education institutions based on a methodology developed by the Observatory for Borderless Higher Education. This exercise informed the development of the IoE learning and Teaching Strategy and identified the strengths and weaknesses of e-learning provision at the IoE.

HEA/JISC Pilot Pathfinder Project - PREEL

This project was one of nine HEA Pathfinder Pilot projects funded by the HEA following on from the benchmarking pilots. This project sets out to bridge the gap between e-learning research and e-learning practice within the IoE, and to demonstrate how this was done in such a way as to be of value to other HE institutions. The focus of the project was to build on our strong e-learning research base in order to embed e-learning in our everyday teaching practice, and to achieve this through:

  • A scoping study to identify areas of research which are most likely to have impact on IoE teaching practice·
  • Redesign of 12 modules·
  • Support for staff in the form of resources for days of release time and materials; and direct support from the LTU and PREEL teams and staff development activities·
  • Support for research publications arising from the course redesigns.

Pathfinder Network Project - PREEL 2 - Quality Assurance and Quality Enhancement in e-learning

The aims of this Network extension project are to:

  • Develop dissemination and training materials related to quality assurance in e-learning based on earlier work of the PREEL project
  • Develop dissemination and training materials based on experience of the PREEL project in implementing research-based practice.·
  • Work with collaborating Phase 1 and Phase 2 institutions, running workshops and providing support·
  • Establishment of a SIG for QA/QE in e-learning
