Mobile applications have a significant potential to engage learners as "citizen scientists", enhancing links between research in academia and the general public. Dr Brock Craft and Dr George Roussos, working in collaboration with the Institute of Zoology, and Atomic Powered,†have developed "iBats", an†iPhone/Android†application for use by citizen scientists participating in the Indicator Bats Programme. This research programme tracks bat populations globally by monitoring sounds bats make to navigate and find food. Volunteers around the world can use the iBats app and a special microphone to collect bat sounds for analysis by the scientific research team at Institute of Zoology. You can download the iPhone app from the iTunes App Store and the Android App from the iBats website.
