The prestigious awards for excellence in higher education teaching and learning are part of an overall Higher Education Academy (HEA) programme to inspire and celebrate teacher excellence. This year 55 lecturers and learning support staff have been chosen from over 200 nominations submitted by higher education institutions across England, Northern Ireland, and Wales. Each will receive an award of £10,000 which may be used for Fellows' professional development in teaching and learning or aspects of pedagogy. Dr Oliver is a reader in ICT and leads the Learning Technologies Unit at the Institute of Education, supporting curriculum development involving technology across the institution, he also teaches on the MA programme, ICT in Education. Placing people rather than technology at the centre of his work, Dr Oliver is interested in how people makes sense of the technologies they encounter and what they chose to do with them within their educational process. His teaching encourages learners to relate topics to their personal and professional experiences in order to enhance learning. Professor Chris Husbands, Director of the Institute said "I am delighted to offer my congratulations to Martin on becoming a National Teaching Fellow. I am particularly pleased that the Fellowship scheme has recognised Martin's work on the critical relationship between technology and teaching, getting this right is crucial to developing the quality of the student experience". Dr Oliver's work spans teaching, research and academic development - areas that he sees as closely connected rather than separate. His work focuses on developing these connections, using critical perspectives that help individuals to think differently about themselves and their use of technology. One of his PhD students said "Dr Oliver has given me the intellectual courage I needed. Studying with his support I have become able to develop not just my knowledge but also my sense of academic self-worth. His feedback is always detailed, incisive, challenging, and he always makes me feel that what I am saying is of importance". Notes for Editors:
