LKL PhD Students Seminar

In this session of the current seminar series, we have two presentations, details as follows:

Mihaela Cocea

Title: Monitoring Learners' Exploratory Behaviour for Mathematical Generalisation

Abstract:

Exploratory Learning Environments (ELEs) are characterised by freedom given to learners and are usually suitable for domains where multiple solutions could be obtained and where the exploration is important for understanding the characteristics of the domain. These aspects make it difficult to support learners during exploration in a meaningful way. To address this problem, a monitoring mechanism based on Case-Based Reasoning is proposed, aiming to identify strategies that learners follow when solving a task (and detect off-task behaviour) and inform the feedback mechanism. The focus of this presentation is on the identification of strategies using an ELE for the domain of mathematical generalization developed in the context of MiGen Project.

Damien Darcy

Title: Collaboration, Competition and Sense Making in OpenLife

Abstract:

My study outlines the learning challenges inherent in hybrid spaces (where students interact in both the physical and digital domains) and focuses on the role of concepts such as:

Fragmented Interactions
Asymmetries
Collaboration
Co-Ordination

These will be assessed in the light of a forthcoming pilot study which will involve using the OpenLife virtual world to teach GCSE English literature ("Frankenstein") through role plays and world building.
