The rise of disruptive technologies: weblogs and social software in learning and teaching environments

Dr. Steven Warburton
ICT and eLearning Manager at King's College London with a background in the implementation and evaluation of learning technology. He has managed both technical and pedagogically driven eLearning projects that have included work on personal publishing tools, social software, virtual learning environments, and the development of a variety of blended teaching programmes.

The Internet has entered a new era of participation. Web 2.0 may be an attitude, rather than a technology, yet brought with it a range of tools and services that offer unprecedented opportunities for collaboration, sharing and content production. Perhaps the most well known of these is blogging. As weblogs continue to penetrate numerous cultural domains they have caused many commentators to rethink understandings of connectedness and community. Inevitably, their open structure and often creative tone and style have stimulated much interest in the educational sector as to what this dynamic form of reflective online presence can offer within learning and teaching environments. The reference point for this talk is the ongoing qualitative analysis of a fully online Masters degree. The initial results from this study of student weblog usage will be presented alongside broader debates surrounding the deployment of social software within educational settings.
