CONSTRUCTIVISM AND MATHEMATICS IN THE ART OF WALDEMAR CORDEIRO

Waldemar Cordeiro (1925-1973) was a Brazilian artist involved with theconcrete movement in São Paulo, that can be understood as part of themodern abstractionist movement. Cordeiro participated in the writing andlaunch of the Concreto Manifesto, proclaiming a rupture with figurativeart. In the mid 1960s the artist started a partnership with ProfessorGiorgio Moscati, a physicist at the University of São Paulo, in order toproduce computer art. The duo made a series of artworks based oncombinatorial analysis including images generated by derived functions. This seminar discusses the scenario that led Cordeiro to approach themathematical rigour to produce artworks that addressed social, aestheticand technological questions.
