New research project on the history of schools computing
Monday, 21 February 2011
bbc_micro_logo.pngThis new British Academy-funded project led by Neil Selwyn aims to explore the origins of educational technology policymaking during the 1979-1990 Thatcher governments. This period saw the UK established as a leading nation in the educational use of technology - with a succession of public policies supporting the subsidized provision of †ëa computer in every school' to the inclusion of IT as a core component of the National Curriculum.

Through a series of in-depth retrospective interviews with key policy actors of the time, the project will develop a detailed 'policy historiography' of this period. The project aims to shed light on the relations of power and ideological agendas that underpinned the development of these policies - and therefore seeks to trace the lasting influence of these actions on subsequent phases of 'ed-tech' policymaking during the 1990s and 2000s.
