The Bridges Conference: Mathematical Connections
|
Bridges was pleased to welcome Zometool experts to present various activities throughout the conference, including:
Zometool Workshop - Wednesday 9 August, London Knowledge LabPaul Hildebrandt led a workshop for parents and children that used the Zometool kit to explore space in three and four dimensions by building on simple relationships between numbers, shapes and symmetry. There is a short movie about the workshop on the Videos page. Related: See Paul's presentation for Google Tech Talks, 18 August 2006: 2, 3, 5, Infinity! The Biggie - Constructing the Omnitruncated 120/600-cellThis sculpture was created on August 9 at the London Knowledge Lab by a large team led by David Richter, Dan Duddy, and Paul Hildebrandt including: Scott Vorthmann, Geoff Child, Edmund Harriss, Andrew Griffin, Gary Woodley, Paul & Helen Brazier, Robert McDermott, Maki Maehata, Noriko Maehata, John and Shirley Bibby , Doug McKenna, Samuel Verbiese, George W. Hart, Michael Green, Wiebke Drenckhan, Marcel Tünnissen, Rachel Hall, David Richter, Laurinda Brown, Eva Knoll, Jean Marc Castera and more. It is the projection from the fourth dimension into 3D space of a 4D polytope (the equivalent in the fourth dimension of a polyhedron in three dimensions). The design of the structure is not a design at all, but a mathematical necessity that turns out to fit into the Zometool system automatically. Read more here, and see some pictures here and here [more description and pictures in preparation]. The sculpture has been given to the London Knowledge Lab by Zometool Inc (Colorado, USA) and will be on permanent and open display at the Lab in central London [location; building open to visitors Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm]. The Zome Bridges Sculpture ProjectBeginning with the 2006 Bridges Conference, Zome enthusiasts and Zometool Inc. will be sponsoring an effort to design, build and install visionary Zome-based sculptures at Bridges venues on an ongoing basis. To find out more about the project, read the paper Zome-inspired Sculpture by Paul Hildebrandt. |
