The Higher Education Academy has selected the Institute of Education as one of the partners in the pilot phase of the e-Learning Benchmarking Exercise.

The exercise has three aims:

• to provide institutions with the information to make informed plans for future development
• to allow institutions providing higher education to identify their current progress, on embedding e-learning, in relation to similar institutions
• to provide a picture of the sector as a whole in order to identify areas of strategic importance to inform the work of the JISC, the Academy and the Funding Councils
  

The pilot partners communicate via a network of weblogs. The Learning Technologies Unit was first to set up an institutional weblog for the Institute of Education.

The Teaching and Research Awards Scheme is designed to encourage research and teaching development activities that could lead to the enhancement of knowledge about, and methods of implementing, distance learning and teaching. In particular, the scheme intends to assist the introduction or development of educational innovations that individuals or colleges would otherwise be unable to fund, making it easier for practitioners to engage in pedagogical discourse and networks that may not have a priority for funding within their own discipline or institution.

The Scheme is open to staff throughout the federal University.

Deadline for submissions: 31 March 2006.

The LTU coordinated a pilot of the Blackboard Learning and Content Management System in cooperation with Information Services, liaising with the Bloomsbury Consortium, during the academic year of 2005/6. Several IoE courses or modules have started using Blackboard in the autumn term of 2005/6, and many more followed in 2006 to present.
