Overview

The media are central to the lives and identities of young people today. Indeed, some would argue that the very invention of 'youth' as a social category is inextricably tied up with the development of the modern media.

This module looks at the changing nature of youth culture, and its implications for education. The first block looks at debates and theories associated with contemporary youth culture. It considers the methodological difficulties in defining and studying youth culture, in relation to broader theories of culture and subculture; and it focuses on different ways of interpreting the history of youth cultures in post-war Britain.
