Prof. Jaafar Elmirghani
Prof. Jaafar Elmirghani is a Fellow of IEE and InstP, and was appointed to a chair in Communication Networks and Systems in Leeds in 2007. He was Professor of optical communications in the University of Wales Swansea between 2000 and 2007, head and founder of the Institute of Advanced Telecommunications (IAT) at the University of Wales Swansea, with about 40 full time staff. He is Chairman of the IEEE UK and RI Communications Chapter and was Chairman of IEEE Comsoc Transmission Access and Optical Systems Committee and Chairman of IEEE Comsoc Signal Processing and Communication Electronics (SPCE) Committee. He was a member of IEEE ComSoc Technical Activities Councilâ€™ (TAC) and is and has been on the technical program committee of thirteen IEEE ICC/GLOBECOM conferences between 1995 and 2007 including eight times as Symposium Chair. He received the IEEE Communications Society 2005 Hal Sobol award for exemplary service to meetings and conferences, the IEEE Communications Society 2005 Chapter Achievement award and the University of Wales Swansea inaugural â€˜Outstanding Research Achievement Awardâ€™, 2006. He has published over 200 technical papers, co-edited â€œPhotonic Switching Technology- Systems and Networksâ€, IEEE Press 1998, leads a number of research projects and has research interests in communication networks, wireless and optical communication systems.
