About us
The Learning and Technology at Work is a Special Interest Group of Kaleidoscope (European Network of Excellence in technology-enhanced learning), with the following aims:
(i) To explore how the practices of learning and the modes of knowledge creation in workplaces, and the knowledge required for work are being transformed by information and communication technologies;
(ii) To explore how the design, production and delivery of goods and services is being radically changed by companies' concerns for efficiency, global competitiveness, quality control and productivity;
(iii) To identify new models of learning and innovation and new conceptual tools to support work-based learning and e-learning in a range of different contexts.
Working and Learning
Despite the tendency of digital technologies - especially in their initial phases - to deskill the workforce, it is fast becoming clear that there are new skills and knowledge that are demanded by its introduction. To work effectively, maintain competitiveness, to take on new projects and work with a range of colleagues requires continual learning.
In the field of technology-enhanced learning, there is a need to clarify what learning means in a work context? What is the role of online learning and communication? How do companies create and manage knowledge?
Techno-culture
When we consider the various styles of work and learning in different European countries, these questions become more complex - and more interesting. Companies and workers are increasingly mobile, multicultural, and technologically adept. Our research group is therefore cross-European and interdisciplinary The group is working to:
- Provide the opportunity for researchers and users from varied backgrounds - traditionally separated - to meet together to face important and complex issues that have important theoretical and policy outcomes
- Contribute significantly to building a new inter-disciplinary network in this emerging field of research
- Foster active dialogue between academics and businesses who not only provide the settings for research, but who are also among the main users of its outcomes, and who should be major contributes to the objectives, design and implementation of workplace learning.
The ubiquity of information and communication technologies is transforming workplaces.
The project steering committee includes Francoise Decortis, University of Liege; Leif Christian Lahn, University of Olso; Vanda Luengo, MeTAH/CLIPS and Barbara Wasson, University of Bergen, as well as Richrad Noss, University of London.
Significant Output
A successful European research symposium was held in March 2004, with international speakers. Complete video of the event is available on the Kaleidoscope web site. The group is now working toward developing an interactive virtual space to act as a focal point for the interested parties, as well as constructing an inventory of related research conducted in Europe and elsewhere. A proposal for the special issue of the journal Mind, Culture and Activity has been submitted and a European research workshop for Autumn 2005 is in progress.
